Braces and Clear Aligners: How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy During Orthodontic Treatment
Braces and clear aligners can do wonderful things for the way your smile looks and functions. They can also make your usual oral-care routine feel suddenly more complicated. Brackets create new corners for plaque to hide, aligners can trap food and bacteria against teeth, and a busy school or work day can make it tempting to rush the details.
At Mighty Molar, we are big believers in making preventive care feel simple and achievable. Whether you are a teen with braces, an adult starting clear aligners, or a parent helping a child build a new routine, these practical habits can help protect your teeth and gums while your smile is in motion.
Why Orthodontic Care Needs Extra Attention
Orthodontic treatment changes the landscape of your mouth. With braces, plaque can collect around brackets, under wires, and along the gumline. With clear aligners, teeth are covered for many hours of the day, which means any food debris or sugary drink residue can stay close to the enamel longer than usual.
This does not mean orthodontic treatment is harmful. It simply means your daily routine needs to be a little more intentional. The Canadian Dental Association notes that plaque can build up around braces and that proper brushing and flossing are especially important during treatment. Keeping plaque under control helps lower the chance of gum inflammation, cavities, and the white marks that can sometimes appear around brackets.
If You Have Braces: Clean Every Surface, Not Just the Front
When you brush with braces, give yourself enough time to clean the front of the brackets, the area above them near the gumline, and the chewing and tongue-side surfaces of every tooth. A soft toothbrush or electric toothbrush with a small head can make it easier to work around the hardware without being too aggressive.
Cleaning between teeth is just as important. A floss threader, orthodontic floss, or appropriately sized interdental brush can help you navigate under the wire. The “best” tool is the one you will actually use consistently, so do not be shy about asking your hygienist to show you a few options.
Choose Braces-Friendly Snacks When You Can
Hard, sticky foods can damage brackets and wires, while frequent sugary snacks give plaque more fuel. You do not have to eat perfectly, but choosing water more often, saving sweet treats for mealtimes, and avoiding chewing ice or sticky candy can make a real difference. If a wire is poking or a bracket comes loose, contact your orthodontic provider rather than trying to fix it yourself.
If You Have Clear Aligners: Clean Your Teeth Before They Go Back In
Clear aligners come out for meals, which is one of their perks. The key is avoiding the “snack, rinse, and reinsert” habit whenever possible. Before putting aligners back in, brush your teeth if you can. If you are away from home, at least rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and brush as soon as you are able.
Aligners need daily care, too. Gently clean them using the method recommended by your orthodontic provider, keep them in their case whenever they are out, and never leave them wrapped in a napkin where they can be accidentally tossed away. Avoid using hot water, which can warp plastic appliances.
Professional Hygiene Visits Are Part of the Plan
Your orthodontist manages tooth movement. Your dental hygienist supports the health of the teeth and gums along the way. Regular hygiene visits let us remove buildup from the places that are hardest to reach, check your gums, and tailor your home routine as your treatment changes.
There is no need to feel self-conscious if you have missed a few tricky spots. That is exactly why we are here. We will show you what is working, what can improve, and how to make your routine feel more manageable between appointments.
