Oral Cancer: What Every Kamloops Resident Should Know About Screening
When you think about visiting your dental hygienist, you probably picture getting your teeth polished, having tartar removed, and chatting about your flossing habits. While keeping your teeth and gums healthy is our primary focus at Mighty Molar, there is another crucial aspect of your appointment that you might not even realize is happening: an oral cancer screening.
Oral cancer is a serious condition, but like many forms of cancer, early detection dramatically increases the chances of successful treatment. We believe that knowledge is power, so let's discuss what oral cancer is, what we look for during your visit, and what you can do at home.
Understanding Oral Cancer
Oral cancer can develop anywhere in the mouth, including the lips, gums, tongue, the inner lining of the cheeks, the roof of the mouth, or the floor of the mouth (under the tongue). It can also occur in the oropharynx, which is the part of the throat just behind the mouth.
Historically, oral cancer was primarily associated with heavy tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption, particularly in older adults. While these remain significant risk factors, the landscape is changing. Today, the human papillomavirus (HPV) is a leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers, meaning that oral cancer is increasingly affecting younger, non-smoking individuals.
The Warning Signs to Watch For
Because oral cancer can affect anyone, it is important to be aware of the signs. You should contact a healthcare professional if you notice any of the following symptoms lasting for more than two weeks:
First, look out for any sore, irritation, or ulcer in the mouth or on the lips that does not heal. Second, pay attention to any red or white patches on your gums, tongue, or the lining of your mouth. Other warning signs include a persistent lump or thickening of the cheek, difficulty chewing or swallowing, a chronic sore throat or feeling like something is caught in your throat, or numbness in the tongue or other areas of the mouth.

What Happens During a Professional Screening?
At Mighty Molar, an oral cancer screening is a standard, non-negotiable part of your comprehensive hygiene assessment. It is completely painless and only takes a few minutes, but it is incredibly thorough.
We start with a visual inspection, examining your face, neck, lips, and the inside of your nose and mouth for any asymmetries, swellings, or abnormalities. We use a bright light and a mirror to carefully check the roof of your mouth, the back of your throat, and the sides and underside of your tongue—areas that are very difficult for you to see at home.
We also perform a physical (tactile) examination. We will gently feel the lymph nodes in your neck and under your jaw, as well as the tissues inside your mouth, checking for any unusual lumps, bumps, or firm areas.
Your Role in Early Detection
While our professional screenings are vital, you are the best advocate for your own health because you know your body best. We encourage our clients to perform a quick self-check once a month. Use a flashlight and a mirror to look around your mouth, and if you notice anything unusual that doesn't resolve within 14 days, don't ignore it.
By maintaining your regular dental hygiene appointments, you are not just keeping your smile bright—you are taking a proactive step in protecting your overall health and potentially saving your own life.
